Wrap It Up – Create your Perfect Shape with Accessories

Wrap It Up – Create your Perfect Shape with AccessoriesThis fall, wool and felt, heavy cotton and silk charmeuse connect to form trés feminine, but shapeless fashion. These lovely suits, trenches and dresses are lovely to look at on the hanger, but can leave a lot to be desired on your body. Fear not, your curves will once again be seen and they’ll look better than ever as you create your own hourglass with a few strategically placed, shape-shifting accessories.

Belts are nothing revolutionary, but wrapping a double leather belt around a long silk gown will make you take a second look. The flowy lines created by silk, especially on a biased cut dress, are totally comfortable but they tend to make you look like you’ve been shopping in the maternity section. A belt breaks up the line, adds a waist and creates a whole new edgy look that makes a pair of lug-soled boots and a leather Australian hat viable options.

Wrap a belt around anything, but cinch it where it makes your clothes and your figure work for you. If you’re hippy or your waist line isn’t what it used to be, cinch it high – right around your ribs. Accentuate your lover half by wrapping it tight around your middle. Love your hips? Sling it low.

If your wool suit makes you look like a rectangle, add a tall, chic hat. It pulls the eyes straight up and creates the hourglass silhouette from head to waist instead of shoulders to hips.

An extra chunky choker balances a hip-heavy dress. Multiple strands of silver beads ranging in size from extra large to small add dimension to your neck and shoulders and draws the eye up to the most feminine parts of your body.

Wraps and stoles pulled tight across the chest are an ultra-stylish alternative to a belt. They fit a jacket or dress to your figure and add a bit of oomph to your bust size.

Gloves have made a comeback in a dramatic way this season. They also help create a more balanced look, especially when worn with sleeveless or cap-sleeved dresses as cooler weather sets in. Be sure to wear opaque tights when wearing gloves. Tights don’t have to be wool, but they are necessary.

Perhaps the most interesting shaping accessory is the bodice ripper. Fashioned after a Grecian breastplate, these stiff leather corsets can cinch your waist down two sizes. Worn over a cashmere dress, they are both stunning and flattering. Worn under a blazer, they will attract non-stop attention. Wearer beware that you don’t cinch them too tight and cut into your hips. No matter how small your waist looks, if your hips are bulging underneath, all flattery is gone.
