Choosing the Right Necktie

Choosing the Right NecktieNot all men are fashion savvy and although they usually aren’t required to go all out like their female counterparts, it is still essential that men know the basics. Neckties are one of them. Regardless of your lifestyle, at one time or another, you may be required to wear a suit or other special outfit where a necktie will be necessary. However, if you aren’t familiar with how to choose the right kind of necktie, you could be contributing to a fashion mishap.

While it seems like a small item, neckties play a large role in completing the overall look of a man’s outfit. Even though you may hate getting neckties as lame birthday or holiday gifts, when you have the right one, it only makes sense to show it off. The first step is to know how to match your tie to the right outfit. Anytime you see a man with a tie that doesn’t go with what he’s wearing, it sticks out like a sore thumb. Don’t let this happen to you!

There are a handful of things to keep in mind so that you make the right choice every time. When choosing a tie, make sure that it goes well with your skin tone, eye color, and hair color as well as what clothes you are wearing. Of course you should have a small variety of neckties to choose from, depending on what outfit you plan on wearing. The best material for ties is silk or satin. Make sure it is labeled as 100%. When choosing a tie, also make sure to pick the appropriate length. If you’re a tall guy (say 6’4” or taller), you’ll want a tie that is over 20”. Regardless of height, the tip of your necktie should go over about a half inch past your belt line.

The next key to picking the right necktie is to know which ones go with which outfit. Formal outfits tend to look best with an all black tie or with small traces of silver or white. Solid colored ties work best with shirts that contain prints or patterns, such as stripes, plaid, or checkered. If you plan on wearing a solid colored dress shirt but no sport coat, make sure your necktie is in a color that complements or matches whatever color your shirt is. For those wearing sport coats, pick a necktie that contrasts or matches with your shirt or sport coat. One handy trick in this situation is to choose two patterns and one solid color. So if you are wearing a tie and a sport coat that has a pattern, then you’ll want to wear a shirt that is one solid color. There are a few ways to mix and match but it will take some practice.

There are also trendy ties that work well with your job or for business casual wear but remember that your tie should always go with the occasion. Just as you wouldn’t expect to make a big impression wearing a stained shirt or pants, you shouldn’t wear a tie if it is damaged or stained. If your necktie is looking a bit worn, it may be time to upgrade to a new one. Every man should know how to tie a necktie and how to wear one. Don’t think you can get away with a clip-on - those are unacceptable at all times and appear tacky and cheap. Do right by your wardrobe and take time to appreciate a good necktie and what it can do for you and your appearance.
