Hair Transplants: Not Just for the Scalp

Hair Transplants: Not Just for the ScalpWhether you’ve ever thought about hair restoration yourself or not, you can’t make it through any televised sporting event without being bombarded with commercials for every product under the sun that promises to either regrow hair and every clinic in your area that specializes in hair transplants. You might even know someone who’s had a procedure. You’ve definitely seen the awful “doll-hair” result of a plugs procedure and are pleased to see that the science of hair restoration has come a long way in the past 20 years. But did you know it’s moved beyond the scalp into other areas?

It started with transplanting hairs from the back of the head to the front or crown to combat the effects of male pattern baldness. As the science of hair restoration has grown, doctors are now able to harvest hair from anywhere it naturally grows and transplant it to virtually any other area of the body. Doctors can harvest and replant hairs into eyebrows, eye lashes, beards, moustaches, sideburns, chests and anywhere else you desire.

According to the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, almost 99,000 surgical hair restoration procedures took place in the United States in 2008. Approximately 93,000 of those procedures were scalp transplants, but 3,484 eyebrows, 1,369 moustaches and beards and 531 eyelashes were augmented or created. This does not include transplants to sideburns, chest and even the pubic area.

With all the advances in the science of the field, it is now possible to custom order the hair you want where you want it. One guy had always wanted a hairy chest but was almost completely without hair in the area. Through a hair regrowth strategy, he was able to harvest hair from elsewhere on his body and transplant it not only onto his chest, but his stomach as well. Other men who always wanted to be able to grow moustaches or beards have also expressed an interest in getting transplants to their faces.

The key to the success of any hair transplant surgery is in the follicular unit. Whereas plugs were many hairs clustered together unnaturally, follicular unit transplants only move the hairs that were naturally growing together. Usually a follicular unit contains one to three hairs and can be harvested and transplanted individually to maintain the natural look of the original distribution of hair in that region. And it’s convincing too. Doctors are getting more and more artistic in their transplant patterns and, as a result, getting busier and busier. So if you always wish you had better eyebrows, a thicker beard or a full head of hair, there is a hair transplant procedure for you. The question is whether you want it or not.
