While most men tend to have a manly funk after playing sports or working out, some men may experience body odor seemingly out of nowhere. For these individuals, having bad body odor can be serious enough to cause insecurity, fear of being too close to others, and can negatively impact a person’s life. The two culprits guilty of producing bad body odor are bacteria and sweat. Bacteria that lives off the sweat our body secretes is what produces a bad smell - more specifically it is the excrement of bacteria that is actually responsible for the bad odor. Sounds pretty gross, doesn’t it? Aside from these two factors, there are also certain conditions that can possibly be the cause of your body odor.
For most men, just the act of excessively sweating can be enough to trigger a bout of bad body odor. And it doesn’t just take a physical workout to product sweat, either. Stress, nervousness, or Hyperhidrosis (a condition that causes a person to sweat a lot naturally), can all contribute to body odor. To remedy this, you’ll more than likely need to choose a stronger type of deodorant or ask your doctor to prescribe medication to help regulate your sweat.
Being bad about your hygiene is also another cause for bad body odor. Lack of showering or bathing enough can make your body a breeding ground for bacteria. From your skin to the clothes you wear, all these hold a place for bacteria to fester and spread, along with its odor. If you have a tendency to wear the same clothes over and over, that means you are wearing another layer of body odor on top of what your skin/body is producing, which can also contribute to the strength of the stench. The only way to tackle this is to be better about bathing or showering. Only when the bacteria are washed off your body continuously can you begin to smell fresh. The sooner and more often you wash, the better off you’ll be.
What you put inside your body can also affect how you smell on the outside. Foods such as cumin, curry, and garlic are all potent enough to cause your skin to secrete its scent. Aside from avoiding eating too much of these foods at a time, you can also cut down your caffeine intake, such as soda, chocolate, and coffee. Too much caffeine can make body odor worse because it has the ability to stimulate the sweat glands. Another possibility is a product known as boric acid. This item can be purchased at any store for a fairly affordable price and is ideal for warding off bad body odor. It’s ideal to apply boric acid after showering or bathing but use it sparingly, since too much can cause skin irritation.
More seriously, bad body odor can be a sign of a health problem, such as liver disease (people suffering from this tend to smell of ammonia) or diabetes (this produces a nail polish type of smell). If you fall into either of these categories you may want to make an appointment with your doctor right away.
