Being smarter about the food choices you make while you travel doesn’t have to be a pain. All it takes is discipline, planning ahead of time and learning how to adapt to change. The main problem for business men who travel a lot is that you often don’t have a lot of time to spend making meal choices. Opting for fast food or the heartiest dish in a restaurant is a quick way to pack on the pounds and put your health at risk. Chances are you don’t have access to a kitchen and your schedule probably doesn’t allow time to go grocery shopping to prepare a good meal. But that doesn’t mean you still can’t make better choices when it comes to the food you put in your mouth.
One of the first steps you’ll need to take is to cut out the junk food, sugar, and calories. The next time you stay at a hotel that offers a minifridge with snacks, call ahead and request that these snacks be replaced with fruits, veggies, cheese and water. Many hotels are now accommodating to guests seeking a healthier eating regimen and will gladly fulfill your requests. This will prevent you from late night snacking.
Additionally, resist the temptation to order unhealthy food. Instead of gorging on a burger or greasy pizza, stick to a deli sandwich or salad. Plan on eating out at a restaurant? Then plan ahead by knowing what you’ll order ahead of time. This will be easy if you travel frequently to a lot of the same areas. By sticking to your order instead of browsing through the menu you can avoid ordering with your eyes instead of your stomach. Safe dinner foods to order include: fish, steak, or chicken. Skip out on bread and appetizers filled with butter and heavy carbs. Order a salad and veggies as a side dish with your entrée. Needless to say, skip out on dessert.
Keeping a stash of protein bars while you’re going from airport to airport or hotel to hotel will keep you going without the need to reach for a quick fast food order. Most protein bars are filled with a lot of calories and sugar, so opt for a low-calorie and low-sugar version. Munching on these during your flight, layover or in between meetings at the hotel will keep you focused and your hunger pangs at bay.
Are you planning on a road trip to handle your business affairs? Then make sure you make the following food items part of your eating routine: cheese, water, yogurt, veggies, beef, seafood, nuts, fruit, tea, diet soda, and poultry. Food items to stay away from while on the road - or at least eat in small amounts: pastries, pasta, break, sugary beverages and snacks, and rice.
