One of the main goals in finding a suit is to find one that not only fits you but makes you feel good when you wear it. That means being comfortable. It is important to consider what kind of material you want your suit to be made out of. There are a number of commonly used fabrics for men’s suits, including: wool (tweed, flannel), and non-wool (polyester, linen, microfibers, spandex). There are pros and cons to each type of fabric but ultimately it is up to you to choose. Once you start trying different suits on, you’ll start to recognize which fabrics you like and which ones you’d rather stay away from. Wool suits tend to be on the heavier side and are great for keeping you warm in cold temperatures but are typically worn by older men. Non-wool fabrics are extremely popular with younger to middle aged men, tend to be lighter in weight, and are very flexible in terms of style and design. However, some of these fabrics tend to wrinkle very easily.
In addition to choosing between favorable fabrics, you’ll also want to look into the style of the jacket and pants. Oftentimes, men make the mistake of buying a suit that doesn’t fit them quite right, typically in the sleeves. To make sure your jacket sleeves are the right choice, let your arms hang at your sides comfortably. Check to see that the sleeves fall around the wrist area. Then move your arms around and see how flexible the fit is and that you are able to stretch your arms out and about without the rest of the jacket tightening up on you. When wearing a shirt inside of the jacket, it is ideal for the shirt to be a quarter inch longer than the jacket itself. The need for shoulder pads will depend on your build and whether the suit hangs on you right. When it comes to double breasted jackets and single breasted jackets, this will be determined by how formal you want to be. Double breasted jackets fold over themselves in the front and are synonymous with formal events, while single breasted jackets are okay for business and business/casual wear. Collar-wise, make sure yours doesn’t bulge or bunch up behind your neck and that your shirt comes out an inch or so in the back of your collar. When searching for a good jacket, make sure the lapels are flat on the chest and stitched impeccably.
Finding the right pants has to deal with the right fit and length. Make sure the pants fit you snugly around the waist and unless you’re tall in height, skip the cuffs. Pleats are optional and always in style but the latest trend involves wearing flat-front trousers. Shorter men should opt for low-rise pants, while taller men should go for high-rise pants. The rise describes the length between the waistband and the crotch area.
