The blueberry already has an impressive list of health benefits on its roster, including the ability to treat urinary tract infections, ward off certain types of cancer, improve brain function, aid in a healthier heart, and strengthen the body’s immunity system. High in antioxidants, blueberries deliver a huge amount of health boosting properties all by themselves. So how does this tangy, tasting fruit have the ability to reduce or eliminate belly fat? Researchers say it has to do with anthocyanins, which occur naturally in the blueberry. This particular chemical, in combination with the other potent properties, has the ability to affect how the body stores and uses glucose for energy. When added as part of a healthy daily diet in lab rats, the results showed a significant decrease in the rats’ abdominal fat. Researchers hope that if the same effect can be produced in humans, the loss of abdominal fat will also help to reduce the chances of developing conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.
