If you’re looking to provide your body with a large helping of antioxidants, you’ll want to turn to pomegranate juice. This special beverage actually contains more antioxidants than any fruit out there and has three times more antioxidant benefits than drinking red wine or even green tea. Its most potent antioxidants are tannins, polyphenols, and anthocyanins. That’s pretty powerful stuff! Medical studies have shown that patients who consumed pomegranate juice on a daily basis experienced lower cholesterol, an increase in the amount of vitamin C and folic acid present, as well as improved blood flow to the heart. That means pomegranate juice is also effective for maintaining a healthy heart and lowering the risks of heart disease and stroke.
If you thought those were the only health benefits you can enjoy from drinking pomegranate juice, there are a lot more. As a drink, pomegranate juice can prevent and slow down the effects of Alzheimer’s disease, lower blood pressure, keep the arteries from becoming blocked by plaque buildup, prevent cartilage deterioration that can result from osteoarthritis, and can even keep your teeth healthy and plaque-free.
As if that isn’t impressive enough, further medical research found that the presence of pomegranate juice in adult males was strong enough to prevent prostate cancer and delay the negative effects of those already diagnosed with the disease. Just one glass of pomegranate juice a day can keep existing prostate tumors from doubling in size faster, which allows for a longer life period.
You can find pomegranate juice in any store, although there are several types of juice to choose from. For those with culinary expertise, there is pomegranate juice made just for cooking purposes, while regular consumers can purchase naturally sweetened pomegranate juice or pomegranate juice from concentrate, which needs to be diluted with water. If you’re more of a do-it-yourself type, you can buy regular pomegranate fruit from the grocery store and make your own juice. Simply roll the pomegranate over the top of your kitchen counter in different directions. This movement helps to loosen the juice inside. Next, poke a small hole in the pomegranate and squeeze the juice out into a bowl. In this form, you get the full benefits of the pomegranate’s tannins. For added flavor you can mix it in with cherry or apple juice. While you can add sugar, it’s best to drink it without added sugar, since this can take away from the beverage’s natural health benefits.
