The LighterLife Diet: What is it Really?

The LighterLife Diet: What is it Really?Just about everyone seems to be on a quest for the magic diet that will help them shed weight and keep it off. This has given rise to many different types of diets. In the last few years there have been the Atkins Diet, the Zone Diet, The Stone Age Diet and the Cabbage Soup Diet and the list goes on. One of the newest diets to hit the scene is the LighterLife Diet.

The LighterLife Diet is aimed at anyone aged sixteen and over who is at least 14 pounds overweight or with a body mass index of 29 or more. The program is marketed as both a weight loss and weight management diet. Equal emphasis is placed on helping keep the weight off as is placed on shedding the unwanted pounds.

LighterLife is based on sticking to a low calorie diet, which is coupled with counseling. Each person who signs up for LighterLife is automatically assigned a counselor. While on the program everyday foods cannot be eaten. Persons doing the LighterLife Diet have to stick to the program’s meals which provide no more than 500 calories per day. This is fewer calories than you actually need, but the aim is to force your body to use up the reserve energy and then stored body fat. It is this using up of stored body fat that will result in weight loss.

The food provided consists of bars, mousses, soups and shakes. According to the LighterLife Diet system these foods provide all the nutrients needed such as proteins, vitamins and minerals.

To make the food choices appealing they are provided in a number of flavors as follows:

·    Bars: fruit-flavored, lemon, nut crunch and toffee

·    Soups: chicken, vegetables, mushroom and an exotic blend of Thai chili flavors

·    Shakes: Chocolate, vanilla, caramel and raspberry

·    Mousses: Chocolate, vanilla, caramel and raspberry

While on the LighterLife Diet it is important not to drink too much fluid. It is advised that enough fluid is needed to keep hydrated, but too much can be harmful. Approximately four liters of water per day is the recommendation. Once the desired amount of weight is loss is achieved, reintroduction of regular food can begin. The program warns that the reintroduction of carbohydrates must be done carefully to avoid any health issues.

The counseling session is held once per week and is important to the overall success of the program. In the group sessions, the counselor helps dieters come to terms with their ‘relationship’ with food. It is believed that understanding this relationship helps to keep the weight off as people learn how to change their eating habits.

One of the interesting things about the LighterLife Diet is that you must have your doctor’s all clear before beginning the program. Once on it, it is mandatory to have a medical checkup every four weeks. To ensure that weight is lost and kept off, LighterLife has three stages, with the first being the Foundation Stage. If after the first 100 days you still have more weight to lose you move on to the Development stage. At this stage you continue using food packs and attending weekly counseling sessions. The third stage is the Management stage where you learn how to manage what you eat so as to keep the weight off.
