Oat, Beta Glucan & Anti-Aging

Oat, Beta Glucan & Anti-AgingOats have played an important role in maintaining a healthy daily diet and in terms of skincare, oats have been used as an instrumental ingredient in soothing sensitive skin types and treating certain skin conditions. However, recent studies have discovered that oats and more specifically, its origins in beta glucan may have a profound effect when it comes to the fight against aging.

Each year the anti-aging and skincare industry spends tons of money and time researching and developing the latest must-have anti-aging product. This time around, the new “it” ingredient happens to be beta glucan, which is a type of molecule found in oats. According to studies, beta glucan contains properties that make it the ideal anti-wrinkle ingredient. While beta glucan is typically used in accelerating the skin healing process in burn victims, new studies show that this ingredient can penetrate skin that hasn’t been injured or broken. When applied topically to the skin over a period of a few weeks, patients showed an improvement in the appearance of their complexion, with less wrinkles and fine lines. Because of these findings, medical professionals are doing further research to see if the effects of beta glucan can provide newer and improved anti-wrinkle products that will draw consumers and eliminate the need for traditionally invasive anti-wrinkle procedures.

Additionally, beta glucan has the ability to stimulate collagen (which accounts for its superior ability to accelerate wound healing), defends against disease, and can also reduce the appearance of scars. The good news is that in its long history, beta glucan has been proven many times to be completely safe for use by humans in skincare products and also has natural moisturizing and firming properties. Beta glucan can be found in a number of sources, including baker’s yeast, mushrooms, oats, barley, and algae. However, the most effective form of beta glucan for use in anti-aging is the kind that comes from baker’s yeast.

What makes this ingredient so special in terms of anti-aging is due to its natural properties that allow it to be one of the most active ingredients when exposed to the skin. As we age, our skin cells start to slow down in activity, leading to the signs of aging appearing on our complexions. Middle age tends to render our skin’s immune cells helpless and almost completely inactive. This results in dull, slack skin. Because beta glucan is super active, introducing it to the skin and its layers can help stimulate more collagen product and reinvigorate the skin’s immune cells. This means layers of dead skin get removed quicker, making way for newer, youthful skin cells to take their place. The overall result is a more youthful complexion.

All this bodes well for a future filled with beta glucan skincare and anti-wrinkle treatment products and there are currently beta glucan skincare products you can find online.
