Ichthyosis

It is a type of a rare genetic skin disease. It is an inherited disease and therefore it is not contagious. It causes the skin to build up and scale, which causes it to become extremely dry. The rashes which appear look like fish scales. A number of ichthyosis are present at birth and are life long. As of now there is no cure for Ichtyosis. It results in mild to annoying to severe dryness with scales and flakes that become disfiguring. A number of ichthyotic skin diseases are genetic and this disease is a symptom in a number of rare hereditary syndromes and in several systematic disorders. It is a condition which starts early in childhood and is generally lifelong. Ichthyosis vulgaris is found in 95% of all ichthyosis cases. The other kinds of ichthyosis are epidermolytic hyperkeratosis, lamellar ichthyosis and X linked ichthyosis. People who suffer from ichthyosis lead a normal life but might be required to spend a number of hours each day caring for their skin so that they can lead a normal life. People suffering from severe ichthyosis may suffer from overheating, secondary infection, limited movement or impaired eyesight or hearing. Besides ichthyosis vulgaris, other types of ichthyosis rarely occur. It generally strikes elbows, knees and hands.

Cause

It is a genetic disease which is inherited from one’s parent. This condition worsens in cold dry climate. People suffering from ichthyosis have a defect in their skin which results in it loosing moisture. The defect is unknown.

Symptoms

The symptoms of Ichthyosis vary amongst the different types of ichthyosis as they all have a characteristic rough, dry and scaly skin.

This condition can be diagnosed by looking at the skin. Family history is also an important factor in determining this condition. In a few cases a skin biopsy may be required in order to confirm this condition. As of now there is no way to prevent ichthyosis.

Treatment

Ichthyosis cannot be cured. The main aim of the treatments undertaken is to moisturize and exfoliate the skin in order to prevent scaling, dryness, cracking and build up of the skin. People who suffer from ichthyosis are required to moisturize, bathe and exfoliate their skin on a regular basis. The doctor might prescribe moisturizing creams and ointments for keeping the condition under control. In severe cases oral retinoids may be prescribed which could help in reducing scaling. Oral antibiotics are prescribed in case secondary infection occurs.
