Your Guide to Tanning Safely

Your Guide to Tanning SafelyWe all know that tanning can lead to skin cancer or worse, but for most of us, we enjoy the beauty of what a tan can give us now. If you enjoy tanning, finding safer alternatives can be a solution for you.

If you’re in Love with Sunless Tanning Products

Be sure to exfoliate your skin to remove dead skin cells. You should also shave your legs to prevent an uneven application.

Avoid applying sunless tanning products to wet skin or your tan may wind up being streaky. Also keep away from the water for at least a couple of hours after you apply the product for the very same reason. Apply the product with a light touch, especially around areas such as elbows, knees and ankles. If you’re worried about these areas being too dark, dilute those areas with a small amount of moisturizer, first.

To avoid orange hands, wear a pair of disposable latex gloves. These can be easily purchased at a beauty or wholesale store. Even with the gloves, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after application.

If you’re Attracted to Tanning Beds

Be sure the tanning salon has a good reputation. Ask around and found out how well other clients enjoy their services.

Find out if the tanning bed you’re using has a low intensity of UVB rays to minimize risk of burning.

Don’t skimp out on tanning cream just because it’s a tanning bed and be sure it has some form of SPF in it. Also, never use an outdoor tanning cream with a tanning bed. Your tanning salon should provide you with an indoor tanning cream meant for tanning beds.

You should only tan in a bed for no more than 30 minutes. Any longer and you’re exposing yourself to burns.

If you have fair skin and burn easily, tanning beds are not for you. If the tanning salon says they are, run away as fast as you can!

If you’re a Worshiper of the Sun and Just can’t Give it Up

Try to get out and tan before 10am or after 3pm to minimize the excessive ultraviolet rays of the sun.

Don’t lie in the sun for more than an hour (15 minutes if you burn easily) and keep tanning to minimum of 24 hours per a tanning session.

Protect your skin with a moisturizing cream containing SPF if you can get away with it and wear a pair of sunglasses to help protect your eyes.

Avoid using tanning lotions or oils containing mineral oil.   Mineral oil can clog pores and prevents your tan from lasting longer.

Other Safe Tanning Options

Check to see if your local tanning salon offers airbrush tanning. Generally airbrushing looks more natural than a sunless cream or lotion and you’ll have better results. The process takes about one minute and after a few hours you will begin noticing the results.

If you don’t care whether you’re entire body is tan, you can always have the look of a tan on your face. There are several shades of bronzers available in gel or powder and are applied just like a blush. Sweep the bronze color across your cheekbones and you’ll have an instant sun-kissed look. Happy, Safe Tanning!
