Non-surgical rhinoplasty, also known as the 15-minute nose job, is an ideal procedure for patients who are looking to enhance their profiles but are not ready to commit to the actual cosmetic surgery procedure. There are several benefits to this new procedure, including immediate results, little-to-no downtime, an affordable alternative to surgical rhinoplasty and most of all, it is non-invasive and does not require anesthesia. Non-surgical rhinoplasty was created by a New York cosmetic surgeon named Cameron Rokhsar, a board certified cosmetic surgeon and dermatologist. His method and goals are to treat patients “non-surgically” with fillers applied topically in strategic areas of the face and, along with non-surgical rhinoplasty, has created other non-surgical procedures to address concerns such as sagging eyelids, wrinkles and loss of elasticity, scars and weak chins.
How is rhinoplasty performed without the traditional invasive method? The main advantage is that general anesthesia is not used; in fact, the patient is fully awake during the procedure and actually gets to hold a mirror and watch. A plastic surgeon first places a numbing cream directly on the patient’s nose. Next, the surgeon uses fillers such as Botox, Restylane or Radiesse and injects one of these on the patient’s nose. Radiesse is most frequently used because of several reasons: it is FDA approved, is made of calcium hydroxyl crystals which are similar to minerals found in bones and teeth, is 100% biodegradable, it stays put after being injected and does not travel like some fillers can and can last up to one year. The surgeon determines a strategic placement of the filler on the patient’s nose to create a symmetrical profile. After approximately 15 minutes of injections, the procedure is complete. There is little to no discomfort and only minor bruising or swelling may occur. In most cases, the patient can return back to his or her activities after the procedure, while some may require approximately 3-4 days of downtime.
One common concern about this procedure is if after the injections the nose may look bigger. Since the injections are strategically placed, the nose will not look bigger but smaller and more symmetrical to the profile. The new nose will also be in proportion with rest of the features. Non-surgical rhinoplasty is ideal for patients who have bumps or bulges on the nose or for those with downward or droopy tips and want to raise the tip of the nose. This procedure is also ideal for those who would like to build up the bridge, a common concern with African-America and Asians, and for those who have had surgical rhinoplasty in the past but want to enhance their current look. Those with major nasal deformities or who want to actually reduce the size of the nose would best benefit from surgical rhinoplasty.
