When Plastic Surgery May Not Be Worth the Risk

When Plastic Surgery May Not Be Worth the RiskStatistics show that the interest of Americans in plastic surgery continues to grow. This is despite a number of well publicized horror stories and deaths from cosmetic surgery complications. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the number of procedures rose to 12 million last year. However, many plastic surgery practitioners feel that there are some procedures that are simply not worth the risk, especially when it comes to delivering results. ABCnews.com’s article on the report listed a number of procedures that were not advisable, at least right now.

Permanent Wrinkle Fillers

Injecting fillers into the skin remains a popular cosmetic procedure especially among the Hollywood crowd. But while most people opt for temporary fillers like collagen, there are some patients who request permanent fillers such as Aquamid. These fillers carry an increased risk of complications. Surgeons also advise against them because patients would be stuck with poor results. Some of these procedures are outlined below.

Fat Dissolving Injections

Patients battling the bulge would be well advised to steer clear of this procedure according to many cosmetic surgeons. A shot called lipodissolve which is claimed to make fat dissolve is usually part of ‘mesotherapy’ which involves injecting a combination of substances with a thin needle. Plastic surgeon, Dr. Malcolm Roth was quoted as saying of the procedure, “There is really not a single scientific study to show that it definitely works.” Dr. Carolyn Jacob, a board certified dermatologist considers it the most ill-advised procedure available to cosmetic surgery patients. In fact, the procedure is banned in some countries.

Breast Augmentation Injections

With this procedure fat is taken from one area of the body, purified, then injected into the breasts. The fact that it is minimally invasive and leaves no scars appeals to many women but the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery notes, “…aesthetic surgeons certified in plastic surgery have long maintained that injection of fat, or any substance, into or behind the breast tissue can be potentially dangerous.”

The risk is that the injected fat can harden creating scarring within the breast tissue. This can hamper attempts to detect breast cancer. Another version, called the ‘boob jab’ uses artificial fillers, but the results are temporary, and this has also led to concerns regarding the detection of breast cancer.

Other procedures that have raised concerns among plastic surgeons include cosmetic foot and leg extension surgery, butt implants, permanent makeup, and combined breast lift/breast implants. Any prospective cosmetic surgery patient should also be aware that these procedures are sometimes offered by practitioners without the necessary training.

Plastic surgeons advise that some research should be done before making a decision to have work done. Prospective plastic surgery patients should keep in mind the examples of celebrities who have dramatically altered their appearance through plastic surgery and regreted it.   It is also important to avoid extreme procedures such as facial liposuction. As always, remember that once a procedure is done, it is extremely difficult and costly to undo.
